What is a census?

Census refers to a nationwide statistical survey conducted to examine the total number of survey subjects and the individual characteristics of each subject based on the unified criteria set forth by the national government.

What is a Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries?
  • A Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries(CAFF) is a nationwide statistical survey conducted to examine the total number of farming, forestry, and fishery households around the nation that fulfill the definition of farming, forestry, and fishery households, as well as their individual characteristics. Data acquired through this Census are used to establish and evaluate agriculture, forestry, and fisheries policies and regional development plans, to support academic research, and as a population and sampling frame in a sample survey.
  • This Census is a national statistical census, designated (No. 101041) in accordance with Article 5(3) (Conducting Census) and Article 17 Paragraph 1 (Designated Statistics) of the Statistics Act and the Rules for Census of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (Ordinance of the Ministry of Economy and Finance No. 804) to set the groundwork for various agriculture, forestry, and fisheries policies.

Objectives

  • It is necessary to obtain accurate data on the total number and characteristics of the farming, forestry, and fishery population and households in order to establish policies that cope with the changing farming, forestry, and fishery environment in an agile and proactive manner.
  • CAFF is the most fundamental type of census in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector. This Census uses a scientific and systematic survey method to identify the size, population distribution, management types, and regional characteristics of farming, forestry, and fishery households around the nation.
Information acquired through the CAFF is used:
  • 1As basic data for regional development plans of farming, forestry, and fishery villages;
  • 2As a population frame to set the sample frame of academic research and sample surveys on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries;
  • 3To produce statistics in small regions of administrative unit ‘Ris’; and
  • 4To exchange and analyze data among nations.
    Such information will contribute to reinforce the national competitiveness of farming, forestry, and fishery industries.
